Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:55 am, the temperature is 56.8 degrees.
We are going to enjoy very nice weather today and tomorrow. It will be fairly warm both days, in the low to mid-80’s. Lows at night will fall to the low 60’s. There is no rain predicted both days. Humidity will be low.
Little River is flowing at 205 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.99 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 93 cfs. The water temperature is 64.7 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing above normal but at good levels for wading and fly fishing. Water temperatures plunged overnight. For instance, the water temperature at Oconaluftee River is 63.5 degrees and at Cataloochee Creek the reading is 59.9 degrees.
Trout will be actively feeding at most elevations. I would still fish a little higher where the water remains cool throughout the day. Sixty five degrees is a good number, or cooler. Dry flies and nymphs are working. I would certainly try a Green Weenie. According to everything I’m hearing from guides and customers, they are producing well.
Lowland river fishing should be good today, especially if you are fishing shaded rivers. If you plan to fish an open canopy river, you will do best early or late. Poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies should work. If not, switch to streamers or nymphs.
I checked predicted generation schedules at several dams this morning. There are tailwater fishing opportunities for wading and boating on several. In most cases, there will be generation at the dams later today. Plan to go early and pick your spots to stay ahead of rising water.
I would go early to your favorite lake, first, to avoid the sun and second, to avoid recreation boaters. The lakes are probably going to be packed with people in boats today and tomorrow. I would hit the banks with foam floating flies, hair bugs or poppers. As the sun rises, move to shaded banks. By 10 or 11 am, I would be waiting in line at the ramp to load our boat and go home.
A man was killed, his wife is in critical conditions and their child was injured when their boat ran aground on Watts Bar Lake yesterday. I think I read this was a 23 foot boat involved in the accident.
Most lakes, inland waters and the ocean are charted. Chart plotters can help you avoid accidents like this one. Ours is a Humminbird but there are many other highly rated brands you can purchase. Some are even hand-held. Ours shows where you are, the depths and the bottom contour lines all around the boat. We can zoom in or out. Most marine chart plotters also indicate the water depth, speed and water temperature. You can switch the view to see the bottom features. We can split the screen to view the chart and bottom features at the same time. We can see fish and bait schools on ours.
I don’t know about other brands but ours is very user friendly and intuitive. I think it has a 7 inch screen. The larger the screen or monitor, the more they cost. You can buy them for a few hundred dollars up to several thousand dollars.
I have been a Humminbird fan since the 70’s. What I really like about this company is, their customer service people you talk to on the phone are in Eufaula, Alabama. The ones I talked to have all been women. And those women pour on the southern charm. They know these units inside and out. There is a reason for that according to the sales manager I met at a fishing dealer show. These people actually build the units, or they did before becoming customer service people.
Other companies may do the same thing. I don’t know. All I have owned are Humminbirds. My first one is what we called a “flasher”. It indicated the depth and sometimes fish or schools of fish under the boat. The technology has come a long way since the old “flasher” days.
