Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:52 am, the temperature is 64.9 degrees.
It will be sunny and warm today with a high temperature in the mid-80’s, falling to the low 60’s tonight. No rain is expected today. Temperatures will be about the same tomorrow, though there is a low chance for thunderstorms in the afternoon.
Little River is flowing at 146 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.78 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 84 cfs. The water temperature is 64.9 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal today. Normal this time of the year is low. Though water levels are higher than normal, they are still considered low.
Stealth and getting a good drift are essential to your fishing success. If the trout do not see you, you will catch more. Fish the broken water in riffles, pockets, plunge pools and deeper runs. Dry flies and nymphs will work for you.
The lowland rivers are flowing low but in most cases, higher than usual in September. It will be sunny today so I would go early or late. If the river you are fishing has tree canopy, you may do fairly well all day. Poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies should work. Cast to shaded areas in deeper pools.
I saw a few angler friendly generation schedules on the TVA website this morning, especially early. If you wish to fish on a tailwater today, check their website to plan your day.
Labor Day weekend is over so there will be much less boat traffic on the lakes. It will be sunny today so I would go early, at daybreak. Hit the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, hair bugs, streamers or swimming nymphs. As the sun rises, move to shaded banks. When the sun is high and glaring on the water, sub-surface flies will probably work best.
The normal high temperature here, through the month of September is 80 degrees. The normal low temperature is 55 degrees. September normally begins warmer, then much cooler temps are expected later in the month. For instance, the average high temperature on September 30th is 75 degrees and the normal low is 49 degrees. The long term forecast indicates we should be close to normal next week. I am looking forward to that.
We are working on merchandise orders for next year. We always buy much of what we sell in the Fall of the prior year.
Ultra Thread 70 denier (UTC 70) has been hard to find during the past few months due to some manufacturing shortages beyond our control. If you have been trying to buy this thread on our online store, you have found we are out of some colors. This is our best selling fly tying thread, by far. I found some inventory and ordered over 200 spools last week. We should be getting it soon. Some has already arrived. This has been a tough fulfillment year for our fly tying suppliers.
Our largest supplier is out of black marabou right now. That is like a lumber company being out of 8-foot 2 x 4’s. Everything has improved and our department is very well stocked, considering the circumstances. We have a great selection of Whiting dry fly capes right now, which has been in short supply this year.
We have a vast amount of new materials now, with more to come. Fly tying has been very popular this year. I expect that trend to continue. We are expanding the square footage of the department following remodeling, in October.
I track the fulfillment rate for the fly tying department on our online store every day. Our goal is to be at 100%. So far, we are achieving that goal since I started tracking it. We only have about a third of the department online right now. I’ll add more when our suppliers improve their fulfillment.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
