Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:50 am, the temperature is 67.3 degrees.
It will be overcast to partly sunny today with a high temperature around 80 degrees, falling to the low to mid 60’s tonight. There is a very low chance for showers late today. Rain will move into the area tonight along with cooler temperatures. The high temperature tomorrow and Friday will be in the low 70’s. Low temps will fall to the low to mid-50’s Friday and Saturday night. Sunday should be sunny with a high in the low 70’s and a low in the upper 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 100 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.59 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 73 cfs. The water temperature is 68.4 degrees.
Little Pigeon River, Oconaluftee River, Tellico River and Cataloochee Creek are all flowing slightly higher than normal this morning.
This will be a good fishing day in the Smokies mainly because it should be overcast most of the day. We are hearing good fishing reports from customers at the shop. Nymphs and dry flies are catching trout. A dry fly with a nymph dropper is a good choice.
Flows in the lowland rivers are higher than normal, which is low. I drove by Little River twice yesterday and it looked pretty good for September. If it in fact cloudy today, that will be beneficial. Cast hair bugs, poppers or foam floating flies to catch smallmouth bass, rock bass and sunfishes. Fishing in the lowland rivers should be good today.
If you are hoping to fish on a trout or smallmouth tailwater today, there are some options, especially early. TVA and the Corps will be generating at many dams this afternoon. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
If it is indeed overcast, this may be an excellent day to fish on one of the many lakes we have in the area. You should have almost no wind to deal with and hopefully no sun. I would still go early or late and cast hair bugs, poppers or foam floating flies to the banks. If they are not working, switch to a streamer or swimming nymph.
Bears were active in our neighborhood late yesterday. I was tying a fly when Paula walked into my office and told me a large bear walked by the back of our house. He was walking in the direction of our barn. She sent text messages to two of our neighbors. About an hour later, we heard two shots and an immediate thud on our house.
I walked outside and looked for damage to the house. I didn’t see anything obvious. She sent another text saying we think a bullet hit our house. One of our neighbors walked to our house and told us an interesting story. He was working in their garage and a small bear walked in. He could not get the bear to leave, so he fired two shots toward the bear.
Their house is on higher ground than ours and there are hundreds of trees between us and them. We can’t see their house and they can’t see ours. It seems almost impossible that a bullet would travel through those trees and hit our house. I am calling a company to check our roof today. Better safe than sorry.
This has been a bad bear year where we live.
More information has been released about the man found dead at a Hazel Creek backcountry campsite, with a bear scavenging his remains. Rangers killed the bear. An autopsy was performed yesterday to determine the cause of his death. He was 43 years old, from Elgin Illinois, and he was camping alone.

Bear attacks are extremely rare in the National Park. There have only been five known bear attacks according to the Asheville Citizen-Times. One of those was fatal. Another was terrifying but it was not fatal. I remember both well.
You should read this story.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
