Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:48 am, the temperature is 47.7 degrees.
This is going to be another Fall-like beautiful day with a high temperature around 70 degrees and a low tonight in the mid to upper 40’s. The forecast for tomorrow is almost identical to today, but a little warmer tomorrow night. No rain is expected either day.
Mount LeConte Lodge reported a low temperature yesterday of 35 degrees. The high there today will be in the mid 50’s.
We were busy at the shop and in town yesterday. A lot of people were outside enjoying the cool and sunny day. People were running, walking, bicycling, hiking and fishing.
I talked to a nice lady who was roller skating in our parking lot. She told me it is great exercise and a lot of fun, but she did mention she experienced a “face plant” the first day she took up the activity recently. She was wearing a helmet and padding on her arms and knees. I would have been wearing a football helmet and body armor. It did look like fun though I hate the thought of hitting the pavement. I guess it would be better than falling off a bicycle.
The USGS sites are not transmitting data this morning. The same thing happened a few days ago. We will not know the stream levels or temperatures until this problem is resolved, which will likely occur later this morning.
We can assume the streams in the Smokies are still flowing higher than normal, which is low, and the water temperatures fell overnight.
Fishing in the mountains should be good today. Dry flies and nymphs will work.
The lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal but flows are low. I drove by Little River a couple of times yesterday and it looked fine. It will be sunny today so fishing will likely be best early or late, for smallmouth bass and other lowland river species. Poppers, foam floating flies and hair bugs should work. It not, switch to streamers or nymphs. If you are fishing midday on rivers that have tree canopy, cast to the shaded areas.
There are a few tailwater wade fishing opportunities today in middle and east Tennessee, but they are limited. Boating might be a better choice on some rivers. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are. The TVA website is functional today.
I would launch my boat at daybreak and plan on fishing until late morning or go late and fish until dark on the lakes. It will be sunny and clear all day. Fish the shaded banks with poppers, foam floating flies and hair bugs. If the surface action is slow, switch to streamers or swimming nymphs.
Tomorrow is the first day of Fall.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
