Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:48 am, the temperature is 48.9 degrees.
This will be another cool and partly sunny day, with a high around 70 degrees and a low tonight in the mid-50’s. It will be mostly cloudy tomorrow with similar temperatures that we have today. The chance for rain arrives in the Tennessee Valley Thursday, and lasts through Sunday and beyond. It will be warmer this weekend.
Little River is flowing at 100 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.59 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 79 cfs. The water temperature is 58.1 degrees this morning.
Stream flows are low in the mountains, though they are higher than normal. Water temperatures are very good. Stay hidden from the trout and you will catch more. Dry flies and nymphs will work.
Fishing will be best in most lowland rivers early and late when the sun is off the water unless your favorite river has tree canopy. Cast poppers, foam floating flies and hair bugs in the deeper pools and runs for smallmouth bass and other lowland river fishes.
Wade fishing on the area tailwaters is limited today by longer periods of generation at some dams. There are opportunities. Check the TVA website to see the generation schedules.
I would go early or late to the lakes as this will be a partly sunny day. There may be clouds at times which is beneficial for shallow water angling. Lake fishing will be better tomorrow as it will be overcast. Cast hair bugs, poppers or foam floating flies to the banks. If that is not working, switch to streamers or swimming nymphs.
Today is the first day of Fall and it feels like Fall. We have been busy at the shop. People want to be outside to enjoy this cool weather.
Paula and I were sitting in the keeping area next to the kitchen early yesterday evening. We have a six-foot wide sliding door there, with a view of the forest. A bear walked up to the door and almost touched the glass with its nose as we watched. The bear decided to check out one of the posts where we hang bird feeders during the Winter. He stood up to examine the top of the post. Then, Paula opened the door and the bear walked into the forest, stopped and looked back at her.
It is a thrill to be that close to one when you are separated by a barrier. We were sitting five feet from the bear. Two weeks ago, we were closer to one that that. That bear was larger, and on our front porch. It walked by our front door two feet from where we were standing.
This has been an extremely active bear year. We have never seen this many bears at our home. It’s not just one bear. There are many, in all sizes. There have been periods of time when we have seen them almost daily and often very close. None of them have shown threating behavior.
Euro nymphing continues to be more popular. More trout anglers are using flies tied on jig hooks with slotted tungsten beads. We have a large selection of both. I started stocking Firehole slotted beads several weeks ago but I didn’t add them to our online store. I wanted to see which ones sold best to customers shopping in our store, so I could stock up on those.
Sunday and yesterday I photographed and added Firehole tungsten slotted beads to our online store in five colors with six sizes of each. The come in 28 packs and sell for $8.25. You can see them on our online store by CLICKING HERE.
We also stock many colors and sizes of Firehole round tungsten beads and hooks. We have a category dedicated to Firehole on the store. You will see it on the menu once you are there.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
