Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:56 am, the temperature is 64.2 degrees.
It has been raining since 2:10 am. So far, .49 inches have fallen.
Rain will continue for a while but should temporarily end later this morning. The high temperature today is predicted to be in the low 70’s. Rainfall will return tonight and continue through tomorrow. The National Weather Service reports there is a chance for heavy rain, up to 2.5 inches today and tonight in some areas. The service also states we may see heavy rain tomorrow.
Little River is flowing at 121 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.74 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 78 cfs. The water temperature is 59.9 degrees this morning. The river is just now beginning to rise.
All rivers in the mountains that have USGS gauge sites indicate a slight rise in water levels except the West Prong of Little Pigeon River at Gatlinburg.
I don’t know what to expect today. If the rain ends soon we may not see a rapid rise in the rivers. It is too early to know how high they will rise.
I would wait a while before going fishing and watch the USGS gauge websites. A sharp rise would indicate possibly stained water. I am looking at the weather radar now and it appears the heaviest rain is about over here for a while but that is not absolute.
Lowland rivers may be stained and rising. Little River at Maryville and Little Pigeon River at Sevierville are not showing much increase in flows right now. That may change. Wait to see what happens. Watch the USGS gauge readings before going.
Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your tailwater fishing options are. I saw breaks in the generation schedules at some dams.
Lake fishing may be good today. It will be overcast. Winds are expected to be light and variable. If you go now, you are probably going to get wet.
We have been unintentionally fooled by the weather forecasters during the past two or three weeks. Rainfall amounts have far exceeded their predictions during two recent rain events. This storm may not be accurately predictable again. We will just have to wait and see what happens.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
