Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:54 am, the temperature is 67.6 degrees.
The rain finally ended. Today will be cloudy early and gradually clearing this afternoon with a high temperature in the mid-70’s.
Little River if flowing at 377 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.49 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 71 cfs. The water temperature is 60.4 degrees this morning. Yesterday, the water level peaked at about 3.5 feet. I think 2.5 feet on the gauge is on the high side of good and that is where the river is right now. The river is receding.
Little Pigeon River is flowing high at the Sevierville gauge. Flow is currently 1,170 cfs, 2.98 feet, compared to median flow of 130 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,020 cfs or 2.52 feet at the Birdtown gauge. Median flow for this date is 191 cfs. The water is receding.
Tellico River is flowing at 382 cfs, 1.87 feet, compared to median flow of 66 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 237 cfs, 3.08 feet, compared to median flow of 41 cfs.
Water levels in the Smokies are falling. Some streams are still flowing high and swift. You can find fishable water today. Little River is a good choice but there are areas where the water is swift. Be careful wading.
Nymph rigs will probably work best today.
Most lowland rivers are flowing high but some may be fishable. Wading will be limited in many rivers. I would use streamers or nymphs for smallmouth bass, rock bass and other lowland species.
If you hope to wade fish on a tailwater today, there are some windows of opportunity in the area but they are limited. Check the TVA website from the links below to see if and where you can work with the predicted flows.
This will be a good lake fishing day. It will be cloudy early and maybe later today too. The wind will be calm, especially early. Air temperatures will be mild. I would go and start with top water flies. Switch to streamers or swimming nymphs if the fish are not feeding on top.
Leaf colors are beautiful right now. This is going to be a nice Fall week, with little to no rain. This weekend is going to be especially nice. It will be cool and dry. If you care camping, you will enjoy your fire in the evenings. We may see a low temperature in the high 30’s Friday night and slightly warmer Saturday night.
The streams will have receded to very good levels by the weekend. This has been an unusually wet October so far. We will enjoy much better water levels than are normal in October. Water temperatures will be cooler this weekend. Fishing may be best later in the day when the water is warmer.
Jack and I are going to buy some of the materials to remodel the second level of the shop and begin today. We are expanding the fly tying department and building smaller offices, leaving one classroom to use when we open the school again. We will be moving the photography studio to a new location in my office.
I am really looking forward to this. Our fly tying business has been growing quickly for three straight years. You are going to love our new fly tying department. You won’t see many this large. You will enjoy an expanded selection of materials and tools.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
