Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:51 am, the temperature is 56.8 degrees.
It will be cloudy today and cool, with a high temperature in the mid to upper 50’s, falling to the upper 30’s tonight. We have a low chance for showers early this morning. Saturday and Sunday will be sunny with a high in the 60’s and lows in the 40’s.
The predicted high temperature today at Newfound Gap will be in the mid to upper 40’s dropping to the low 30’s tonight. Expect a high of 40 degrees today at Mount LeConte and a low tonight in the high 20’s.
Little River is flowing at 181 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.97 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 87 cfs. The water temperature is 58.8 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are very good for trout feeding activity in the low to mid elevations or higher. Nymph rigs will work for you. Dry flies may too.
Lowland rivers are flowing well above normal and at good fishing levels. Streamers and nymphs will probably work best but you may want to try top water flies as well. Smallmouth bass and other lowland species should be active because the water is fairly warm. It will be overcast during the early part of the day. That helps. Trout fishing in the stocked rivers will be very good.
There are a few tailwater fishing choices in east and middle Tennessee. There are more if you are boating. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what options are available.
This should be a good lake fishing day. It will be overcast early, which is very helpful for fly fishing anglers. Game fish are more likely to take top water flies on cloudy days. Winds are predicted to be light, 3 to 5 miles per hour, from the north. You may get wet early this morning.
I would try poppers, hair bugs or foam floating flies. If they do not produce, switch to streamers or swimming nymphs.
Warmer air will move into the area next week. Expect highs in the mid to upper 70’s with lows in the 50’s Monday through Friday.
The remodeling and fly tying department expansion project is proceeding very well. Jack and I hope to be finished in about two weeks. The fly tying department will be about one third larger than it is now when we are finished. Most floor displays will be eliminated as we will have much more display space on the new walls. We will be able to display more materials and tools. Your shopping experience will be much better.
The fly tying part of our business picks up dramatically in November so our timing is perfect. November through February are our best fly tying months at the shop.
I am so excited about this. The fly tying department is my favorite department in the store. Like many of you, I love tying flies.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
