Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:57 am, the temperature is 41.0 degrees.
This is going to be another beautiful Fall day, with a high temperature in the upper 60’s, falling to only the low 50’s tonight. It will be sunny and warmer tomorrow with a high in the low 70’s.
Little River is flowing at 151 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.86 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 73 cfs. The water temperature is 51.1 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauge sites are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range in the low to mid elevations.
Nymphs will work. Dry flies may work too. Be prepared with both. A good dry fly choice this time of the year is a yellow or orange Stimulator. An Elk Hair Caddis is another good choice. There are many nymph options to choose from. It is hard to beat a Pheasant Tail, Tellico, Hare’s Ear or Prince Nymph.
Fishing will probably be best later this morning and afternoon after the water begins to warm.
Lowland river fishing is fair for warmwater species and excellent for trout. The rivers are flowing higher than normal. Nymphs and streamers will probably work best.
There are some tailwater fishing options today. Generation schedules vary by dam, so check the TVA website from the list below to see what your options are.
Lake fishing is fair to good for fly anglers. Go early or late when the sun is off the water. Streamers and swimming nymphs will work. Poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies may produce in some lakes or areas of lakes, depending on the surface water temperature. The wind will be light today. I would fish early, then cruise and enjoy the scenery when the sun is bright and warmer. This will be a beautiful lake cruising day.
I’m going to spend the day packaging thread and ordering fly tying materials. Tomorrow, Jack and I will be back working on the remodeling project upstairs. We are enlarging the fly tying department to about 900 square feet. This will eliminate most of the floor display fixtures, by moving the materials and tools to the new wall space. The department will be more open, to accommodate more customers while still social distancing.
Our entire store is more open. We are eliminating some low revenue departments that use a lot of space, with t-shirts being one of them. T-shirts take up a huge amount of space for the revenue they produce.
The fly department was moved to a much larger and open area, about 500 square feet. We have looked at all departments to determine their sales per square foot, with the goal to create a store that can more safely handle the customers we serve.
We stopped selling fishing licenses this year for the same reason.
We closed our school temporarily for the same reason.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
