Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 60.8 degrees.
It will be sunny and warm today with a high temperature in the upper 70’s and no rain predicted. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the mid-70’s and a slight chance for showers and thunderstorms.
Little River is flowing at 112 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.70 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 77 cfs. The water temperature is 57.6 degrees this morning.
All streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal today. Flows are normally low in October. Water temperatures are perfect for trout feeding activity in the low to mid elevations. Fishing for trout is good in the Smokies. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs.
Lowland river fishing is fair to good. The rivers are flowing higher than normal. The water is warming, which is a good condition when fishing for smallmouth bass and other lowland river species. Nymphs and streamers will work. Top water flies may produce as well. Fishing for stocked trout in these rivers is very good.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers are generating off and on at many of their dams in the region. You will find some tailwaters that are fishable today, especially if you are boating. If you are floating with a guide, they know how to work with these flows.
Lake fishing is fair to good. Winds are expected to be light and variable. It will be sunny today. I would go early and fish until I cannot find shaded banks. Cast streamers or swimming nymphs to the banks. Try topwater flies too.
Last year on this date we were recovering from a drought, throughout the Southeast. For instance, Little River was flowing at 30.8 cfs on September 15, 2019.
On October 1st, flow in Little River was 34.4 cfs when I wrote the fishing report. The water temperature was 73 degrees at the gauge site.
On October 23, 2019, flow in Little River was 100 cfs and the water temperature began the morning at 57.9 degrees. Fishing conditions were improving.
We have been fortunate this Fall. Fishing has been and will continue to be good through the end of October and hopefully beyond. As we progress through the end of the month into early November, we are predicted to get more rain. It is predicted to be cooler by the end of the month, and into the first week of November, but not cold.
This is good news!
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
