Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:50 am, the temperature is 65.3 degrees.
It will be mostly cloudy today with a chance for scattered showers and a high temperature in the low to mid-70’s. There is a slight chance for rain tonight. The low temperature will be in the high 50’s tonight.
Heavy rain yesterday affected some streams and rivers. The Knoxville Airport reported 1.32 inches which was a record for the date. A weather station in Townsend reported less rain,
.35 inches.
Little River is flowing at 112 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.71 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 87 cfs. The water temperature is 61.2 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 222 cfs, 1.62 feet, compared to median flow of 148 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 551 cfs, 1.91 feet, which compares to median flow of 207 cfs. The river is currently rising.
Tellico River is flowing at 166 cfs, 1.22 feet, compared to median flow of 78 cfs. The river is receding.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 102 cfs, 2.60 feet and the creek is rising. Median flow for this date is 41 cfs.
With little to no rain expected today, fishing conditions should good in the Smokies. Check the USGS gauge sites before you go. Some streams are rising this morning. Water temperatures are well within the trout’s preferred range. It will be overcast much of the day. Trout will be actively feeding. Dry flies and nymphs will work.
Lowland rivers are flowing at good levels this morning. You may find stained water in the lower reaches of some rivers. Water temperatures are warm enough for smallmouth bass and other lowland river species to be active. This should be a good fishing day in many rivers. Streamers and nymphs will work. Top water flies may produce as well. Fishing for trout in the stocked rivers is very good.
Tailwater flows are angler friendly below some dams in east and middle Tennessee. Check the TVA website to see the generation schedules. In some cases you will need to go early.
This will be a very good lake fishing day. It will be cloudy at times and the wind will be light and variable. Rain is possible so be prepared for that. Streamers and swimming nymphs will certainly work for most gamefish and panfish. Water temperatures will determine your success using top water flies. Water temperatures will vary by lake and areas in the lakes. I would definitely try poppers, hair bugs or foam floating flies. It will be overcast at times, which is beneficial for top water fly fishing on the lakes.
I am going to spend the day today ordering fly tying materials. Jack and I plan to start painting the walls in the new fly tying expansion area and the new offices tomorrow. Next, we will hang pegboard in the fly tying area. Then, we will install the track lighting. There is a wall and a door to be removed and finished. The remodel has gone very well. Jack is an expert. He runs the project and I try to do what he tells me to do.
Jack is one of my best friends and has been for a long time. We do have fun working together. We would probably rather be fishing together.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
