Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:52 am, the temperature is 62.6 degrees.
Heavy rain is predicted today, tonight and tomorrow as the remnants of Hurricane Zeta move through the area. Rainfall amounts of 2 to 3 inches are expected with higher amounts in excess of 4 inches in isolated areas, especially in the mountains. We are under a flash flood watch tonight and tomorrow. High temperatures will be in the 70’s today and tomorrow. A cold front will move in Friday, lasting through the weekend with highs in the 50’s to low 60’s and lows in the 30’s to low 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 96 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.63 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 91 cfs. The water temperature is 61.5 degrees this morning.
Fishing could be fine early today in the Smokies. When the heavy rain begins, streams will rise and become stained. If you go, be aware that the rivers and streams may rise quickly and be dangerous to wade.
Lowland rivers will likely rise and become stained today, through tomorrow and beyond.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating today at most dams in East and Middle Tennessee in anticipation for the heavy rain expected.
The weather radar indicates rain approaching soon, within an hour or so.
If you refer back to the fishing report on February 5th this year from the archive below, the forecast was very similar. Two to four inches of rain was predicted. I’m fairly sure we got more than that. Little River rose to 11.33 feet on the gauge. Flood stage is 7 feet. That was the highest the river has been since March 3rd, 1994. The river peaked at 15.75 feet on that day. It was the flood we will never forget.
Hopefully rainfall amounts will be lower than predicted.
Jack and I are diligently working on the remodel project at the shop. We are expanding the fly tying department, building two offices and a photography studio. We hung pegboard on three walls in the fly tying expansion area yesterday. I think we are going to remove a wall to open the new area today though customers will not be able to enter for a few days.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
