Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:48 am, the temperature is 34.2 degrees.
We are going to enjoy more sunny days, every day through the weekend with no rain expected. Daytime temperatures will range from the mid-60’s today, climbing to the low 70’s this weekend. Low temperatures at night will be in the 40’s through Friday and in the low to mid 50’s Saturday and Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 256 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.20 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 125 cfs. The water temperature is 46.4 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains continue to recede to good fishable levels. Water temperatures are chilly this morning. Trout will be more active later today and later this week as the water warms. Nymphs will probably work best.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal and on the cold side this morning. I saw Little River several times yesterday in town and further downstream. It looked very good and fishable. Smallmouth bass and other lowland species will be sluggish until the water warms to well above 50 degrees later this week. Fishing for stocked trout in the rivers exiting the Park is good. Streamers and nymphs are good choices.
Wade fishing below the TVA and Corps of Engineers dams is limited today. There are more options if you are boating. View the TVA pages containing generation schedules to see what your options are.
Fly fishing on the lakes is probably slow to fair. As surface temperatures rise this week, fishing will improve. I would go early or late when the sun is off the water. Streamers and swimming nymphs will likely work best for you.
Fishing is going to get better later this week in the free flowing streams and rivers. Lake fishing will improve. Hopefully, anglers who love to wade and fish the tailwaters will enjoy angler friendly flows later this week.
Jack and I loaded my truck and took the scraps from the fly tying department and office remodel to the landfill yesterday. I will finish the painting today. Then, I will move the offices and photo studio into their new home.
Later this week and next week, I will re-arrange the fly tying department. You are going to have more space to shop. Most of the materials and tools that are now on display fixtures will be on the walls. Those fixtures will be stored and possibly used later as we expand our selection. This whole project took 16 working days to complete.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
