Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:48 am, the temperature is 38.7 degrees.
The warming trend has begun. It will be partly cloudy today with a high in the upper 60’s and a low in the mid-40’s. Tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday will be warmer, with high temperatures in the 70’s and lows in the high 40’s to mid-50’s. There is only a slight chance for rain tonight and each day through Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 225 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.11 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 135 cfs. The water temperature is 48.2 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal and at good fishable levels. Water temperatures are cool this morning and falling. Fishing should be better later today after the water temps reverse from falling to rising. Fishing will improve each day through the weekend as water temperatures warm. Nymph rigs are good choices.
Lowland rivers are flowing at good levels. Water temperatures are below the preferred range for smallmouth bass and other lowland river species. Hopefully, these rivers will warm well into the 50’s before this weekend and these fish will become more active. Fishing for trout in the lowland rivers where they are stocked is good. Streamers and nymphs are excellent choices.
Wade fishing options on the tailwaters are limited today in the area. I did not check every one so you may find suitable generation schedules on your favorite tailwater in east or middle Tennessee. You can use the links below to the TVA website to see what your options are.
Lake fishing conditions are fair. Tomorrow looks better as it may be cloudy at least early. Windy days are not expected today and through the weekend. As the surface temperatures warm, fishing may improve somewhat. Swimming nymphs and streamers are probably your best bet. Go early or late when the sun is off the water.
The weather forecast is ideal today and through the weekend. No doubt, many people will be outside enjoying the mountains, lakes and rivers.
Black bear are actively looking for food. We are seeing them often where we live, more this year than ever before. I spotted a large bear in the road on my way to work early yesterday morning. He was just standing there. I slowed down as I approached. He turned his head, saw me coming, stepped out of the road and watched my truck as I drove slowly by.
I have seen many bears crossing the road in that spot and they are not the same bear. Some are large, others are small and some have cubs. I always drive slow when going through that stretch. I almost hit a bear a couple of months ago in that same location. He ran right out in front of me and I barely stopped in time. The speed limit is 30 miles per hour, for a good reason.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
