Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:50 am, the temperature is 53.2 degrees.
It was very warm yesterday. Using the Knoxville Airport as a reference, the high was 81 degrees, which tied the previous record set on the date in 2005. This has been a very dry month. We have had no rain at the airport in November. The last heavy rainfall at the end of October caused Little River to peak at around 6.5 feet. Since then, the rivers in the Smokies have been receding every day.
Warm conditions will continue, though it will be cooler by the weekend. Rain will move into the area tonight and remaining through tomorrow. Thunderstorms are possible. Heavy rain is likely. It will be windy late today and tonight with gusts up to 40 miles per hour, especially in the mountains.
Little River is flowing at 149 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.85 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 156 cfs. The water temperature is 55.4 degrees this morning. The water temperature rose to 56 degrees yesterday at the low elevation USGS gauge near Townsend.
Though Little River is flowing slightly lower than normal, other streams in the mountains are flowing a little higher than normal.
Fishing is very good. I have talked to several customers who have done well using nymphs and dry flies. Trout are rising to midges so be prepared for that. Water temperatures are well within the trout’s preferred range. Their metabolism is in high gear and they are looking for food. Some streams were crowded with anglers this weekend and yesterday.
Go early today. Conditions may be unfavorable later today and tomorrow.
Lowland river fishing is good. Smallmouth bass and other species are active. Streamers and nymphs will work for sure. The fish may also take top water flies. Fishing for trout in the rivers where they are stocked is good.
I do not see many favorable flows on the tailwaters today for wading anglers. You will have more options if you are boating. I did not check every dam so there may be an opportunity for you. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are today.
If you plan to fish on a lake, go early and fish until the sun is high. Streamers and swimming nymphs should work best though gamefish may be taking top water flies too. It may be windy, especially later today.
It appears the weather will have a negative effect on fishing tomorrow. Expect windy conditions and due to the predicted rain, rivers could rise and become stained.
Depending on how much rain we actually get, fishing later this week could be good, or maybe not so good. We will know more tomorrow night.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
