Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 29.8 degrees.
Today will be sunny and cool. The high temperature today should reach the low 50’s falling to near freezing tonight. A welcome warming trend will begin tomorrow and last through the weekend. High temperatures are predicted to reach the high 60’s Friday through Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 176 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.95 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 146 cfs. The water temperature is 43.9 degrees and falling.
Other streams in the mountains are flowing slightly higher than normal. The water is cold at all elevations this morning.
I would fish a low elevation stream where the water is warmer. The streams will warm slightly later today. Wait to go in the afternoon when the water is warmer. Nymphs will probably work best.
As the streams warm beginning tomorrow and through the weekend, fishing will improve. We would like to see water temperatures in the 50’s. You can catch trout when the water temperature is in the 40’s but fishing is much better when the water is warmer.
Lowland river fishing for smallmouth bass and other species except trout will be slow today. Fishing should be fair to good for trout in the stocked rivers, especially later this week. Nymphs and streamers will work best. Go later in the day when the water temperature begins to rise.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating today at most dams in the region. Wade fishing opportunities in the tailwaters are slim. As usual, I did not check every generation schedule so you may find an opportunity on a tailwater somewhere in east or middle Tennessee. Refer to the TVA website from the links below.
Lake fishing conditions are not ideal. Surface temperatures are falling. Calm winds are predicted today and so far, most days this week. I would cast heavily weighted Wooly Buggers, threadfin shad imitations or swimming nymphs to the banks and retrieve slowly.
The long term weather forecast through December 2nd is encouraging. It will be warmer. I don’t see any temperatures in the low 30’s, like we have now. There is a chance for rain at times.
What we really need is a break in the generation at the dams. Hopefully we will see that happen soon.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
