Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 39.6 degrees.
Today will be sunny and warm, with a high temperature in the low to mid 60’s and a low tonight in the low 40’s. It will be sunny tomorrow and slightly cooler with a high in the upper 50’s. Temperatures will remain about the same Sunday but there is a chance for rain in the afternoon.
Little River is flowing at 132 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.78 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 196 cfs. The water temperature is 50.0 degrees this morning.
Other streams in the Smokies are flowing at or slightly higher than normal. Water temperatures are cooler in the higher elevation streams as usual.
Fly fishing for trout in the mountains has improved due to the warming water temperatures. Fishing is probably fair to good. The water will warm further today. I would fish the low elevation streams where the water is warmer. Nymphs will probably work best though you might try a dry and dropper rig too.
The streams are flowing fairly low and clear so stealth is of the most importance to your success. Dress to blend with the forest and fish the choppy water. Don’t let the trout see you and you will catch more.
Lowland river fishing for smallmouth bass may get better today as the water warms. Fishing will be good for trout where they are stocked in these rivers. Nymphs and streamers are good choices.
Tailwater wade fishing options are slim in the area today. You have more opportunities if you are boating. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater today.
Fly fishing on the lakes may be fair. Go early or late when the sun is off the water. Streamers and swimming nymphs are good choices. I would start with a heavily weighted Wooly Bugger fished below the surface and retrieved slowly. Wind should not be an issue today.
Fishing will slow next week as we will get a shot of very cold air moving into East Tennessee beginning Monday. We’ll see lows in the teens, twenties and low 30’s next week. We could get a little snow Monday night.
Our fly tying department is going to be busy. It already is busy. I plan to spend today placing next week’s material and tool orders a couple of days earlier than usual. Then, I will do it again next week before what I order today arrives at the shop. Ordering twice a week from our largest supplier is the only way to keep everything in stock. Will and I will be ordering once a week from our other suppliers.
Daniel and Dave will continue to order and receive gear for the other departments.
Yesterday was a beautiful Thanksgiving. The high temperature was 74 degrees. Paula and I spent the day together and alone but we talked to friends and family on the phone. I did some work outside wearing a short sleeve t-shirt.
Next week is going to be drastically different.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
