Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:04 am, the temperature is 31.3 degrees.
Light snow is falling in Townsend. The snow is sticking to the trees but not the ground, which is too warm. We have about ¼ of an inch sticking on our deck but none on our driveways.
Several roads in Great Smoky Mountains National Park are closed due to snow and ice. They include, Cades Cove Loop Road, Laurel Creek Road, Little River Road and US Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road).
We have a low chance for snow this morning before 11 am. Today will be cloudy with a high temperature around 35 degrees falling to the high teens tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer with a high in the mid to upper 40’s. Thursday will be warmer, with a high in the mid-50’s.
Little River is flowing at 187 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.99 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 249 cfs. The water temperature is 42.8 degrees and falling.
Other streams in the Park that have USGS gauges indicate flows at or slightly higher than normal with falling water temperatures.
Fishing will be slow in the mountains today and many roads are closed for now. This is not a good day to be fishing in the Smokies.
Lowland rivers are chilly, causing fishing for smallmouth bass to be slow. Fishing for trout, where they are stocked is probably fair.
I do not see any wade fishing friendly dam releases in our area except possibly below Center Hill Dam in Middle Tennessee. If you are boating, you have some options. Check the TVA website from the links below to plan your day.
I would not go fishing on a lake today. For one thing, it is going to be cold. It will be fairly breezy too.
I would stay home and tie flies or in my case, go to work at the shop.
Due to a reader's request, I added the TVA link for Chatuge Dam to the list below.
Whatever you decide to do, have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
