Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:51 am, the temperature is 23.5 degrees.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the mid-40’s, falling to the mid 20’s tonight. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny and warmer, with a high in the low to mid 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 146 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.84 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 212 cfs. The water temperature is 38.5 degrees and falling.
Other streams in the Smokies are flowing at or slightly higher than normal. Water temperatures are cold and falling.
Some roads in the Park have re-opened including Cades Cove Loop Road, Little River Road, Laurel Creek Road and Cherokee Orchard Road. It appears Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road) is still closed due to snow and ice.
Fly fishing for trout will be slow today due to the cold water temperatures. If you go, nymphs will probably work best if they work at all.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers will be slow. Fishing for trout that are stocked in these rivers will be fair at best. Wait to go later today after the water warms. Use nymphs or streamers.
I do not check the discharge schedules at all dams in the region, but I did not see many wade fishing options today. If you are boating, there are more opportunities. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what is available for you today. If you are in Middle Tennessee, look at the Center Hill Dam schedule.
I would not go fishing on the lakes today in a small craft, like a kayak or canoe. If you get wet, there could be serious consequences. I would not even go in our boat. I think fishing on the lakes will be slow for us shallow water anglers. Wind should not be a problem. If you are determined to go, fish streamers and swimming nymphs deep and slow.
The mountains are beautiful, covered with a blanket of snow. They came into view when the clouds moved out yesterday afternoon. We didn’t get much snow here in the valley.
LeConte Lodge reported 11 inches of snow fell there. The low temperature at the lodge was 7 degrees yesterday. I enjoy reading the report called “High On LeConte” which is written and posted with photographs every morning by the winter caretaker. You can read it by CLICKING HERE.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
