Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:21 am, the temperature is 27.3 degrees.
Today will be sunny and warmer with a high in the mid-50’s, falling to the upper 30’s tonight. It will be mostly cloudy tomorrow with a high in the 50’s and a good chance for light rain.
Little River is flowing at 146 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.84 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 210 cfs. The water temperature is 37.2 degrees and falling.
All streams in the Smokies are flowing at or slightly higher than normal today.
Due to the cold water, fishing will be slow in the mountains. Snow will be melting which will keep water temperatures low despite the warming air. If you decide to go fishing, nymphs fished deep will probably work best but don’t expect much feeding activity from trout. They will be lethargic for the most part.
Some roads in the Park are closed due to ice and snow including Little River Road from Metcalf Bottoms to the Townsend “Y” and US Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road). I am guessing Little River Road will open today. I hope so.
Lowland river fishing will be slow today for smallmouth bass and probably for stocked trout.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating today at all dams I checked this morning. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater. Maybe you can find suitable flows at some.
Lake fishing is an option today. It should not be windy. I would use heavily weighted streamers retrieved slowly. Surface temperatures are falling. Game fish will likely be holding in deeper water except for possibly trout.
We have a lot of fly tying material and tools orders coming in today and tomorrow. Some orders are very large. Will and I will be taking an inventory of the fly tying department today and for the next several days. We are also raising the inventory levels in our inventory order system so we will stock more during the Winter months.
When I get a break during the day, I sit down and tie a couple of Knuckleheads to sell in the store and online. My new office has a fly tying desk set up for production tying. I am keeping a log of what I tie and I’m averaging 6 per day. That takes about an hour per day. My goal is to produce 1,600 of these flies per year which is what I expect us to sell during that time.
Tying flies to sell is not much fun but if I break it up into short sessions, it’s not bad at all. I buy hooks, foam and eyes in bulk. I have a cutting jig set up to make the bodies and I usually cut a few hundred at a time. I ordered 1,000 pair of eyes recently, then found I already had 2,000 in stock. I won’t need to buy more of those for a while.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
