Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 40.5 degrees.
We got more rain yesterday than was predicted. The Knoxville Airport reported .54 inches. We got .90 inches in Townsend near our home at a personal weather station.
Today will be mostly cloudy early, then gradually becoming sunny with a high temperature near the mid-40’s. It will be clear and colder tonight, with a low in the upper 20’s. Sunday will be partly cloudy with a high in the low 50’s dipping to the low 30’s.
Little River is flowing at 617 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.92 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 218 cfs. The water temperature is 44.1 degrees and steady.
Little Pigeon River is rising. Flow is currently 1,700 cfs, 3.45 feet, compared to median flow of 312 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,040 cfs, 2.58 feet, compared to median flow of 394 cfs. The river is receding.
Tellico River is flowing at 744 cfs, 2.65 feet, which compares to median flow for this date of 167 cfs. The river is receding.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 173 cfs, 2.88 feet, compared to median flow of 73 cfs. The creek is receding.
I think it is safe to say, most streams in the Smokies are flowing high today. Be careful wading. I would stand in safe water and high stick weighted nymph rigs. You may be able to wade and fish in some streams. The water temperatures are low. Trout will probably not be very active but you could catch some.
Most lowland rivers are flowing high and difficult to wade safely. Water temperatures are on the chilly side. I would not expect much activity from smallmouth bass. You might do OK fishing the rivers where trout are stocked.
I was hoping to see angler friendly flows for wade fishing on the area tailwaters. I don’t see any except possibly below Center Hill Dam. I’m not sure if they are sluicing at that dam, so maybe it is not possible to wade. Or, maybe it is. If you are boating you have more options.
It should not be windy today or tomorrow, so you could fish on the lakes. It will be partly cloudy today which is a beneficial condition. I would cast heavily weighted streamers and retrieve them slowly. Wooly Buggers and threadfin shad patterns are both good choices. Fishing may be slow on the lakes. I don’t know one way or another.
I was hoping to get a day off this week and today would have been the day. I’ll have to work a few hours. Several shipments of fly tying materials and tools have arrived. They have to be added to our inventory system and put out on the walls. I have a lot of thread and other spooled items to package.
Right now, several colors or sizes of items are turned off and made unavailable for purchase on our online store in the fly tying department. One of our major suppliers has been slow to get orders shipped to us. A lot of customers are ordering materials and tools online. Today, many of those items will be turned back on and made available to you.
I track our fulfillment rate every day, on orders made online for fly tying materials and tools. I have been doing this since August. My goal is, 100% fulfillment. To date, it is 99.7%. Will and I are both proud of that achievement.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
