Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:55 am, the temperature is 32.0 degrees.
It will be partly sunny this morning becoming sunny this afternoon with a high temperature in the low 40’s. It will be cold tonight, falling to the low to mid-20’s. Tomorrow and Thursday will be clear and warmer, with high temperatures in the low 50’s to around 60 degrees. We have a low chance for rain this weekend with warm temperatures predicted.
Little River is flowing at 283 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.27 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 205 cfs. The water temperature is 41.9 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smokies are flowing slightly higher than normal. Water temperatures are chilly. Fly fishing for trout will improve later this week as the water warms. How warm the water will become remains to be seen.
If you go today, weighted nymphs or nymph rigs will probably work best. Don’t expect much trout feeding activity but you may catch trout, especially post spawn browns.
Lowland river fishing will be slow for most species. Fish the rivers that are stocked with trout and you might get lucky. Use nymphs or streamers.
Check out the generation schedule at Norris Dam. TVA has cut back the generation there today. Look at the schedule at Center Hill Dam. There may be other possibilities for wade fishing and boating on some tailwaters in middle and east Tennessee.
If you plan to fish on one of the many lakes in the area, today might be a good one. It will be partly cloudy early and the wind will be light. I would plan on using streamers, heavily weighted and retrieved slowly. Fishing may not be good but going would be better than sitting at home. Dress warmly.
Though fishing is not exactly great right now, we have been busy at the shop. We are thankful for that and thankful for you. The store is stocked well in all departments. I don’t remember when the shop has looked better than it is now. You will love the newly expanded fly tying department. It is large, open and organized.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.

Buy a Walter Babb made bamboo fly rod or his beautiful 10- dozen flies for charity.
“Due to Covid-19, there will not be a Needy Family Fund Auction this year. I made a rod and tied some flies for the Auction this Spring, so I will be selling them and the proceeds will go to the Needy Family Fund.
Th rod is an 8’ 0” 2 piece 6-weight Stan’s Blackfoot, a great taper from Stan Smartt. This is a single tip rod. The price is $850 plus sales tax.
There is also a box of 10 dozen of my favorite nymphs and wet flies. The price is $253.95 plus sales tax if you are a Tennessee resident.
If interested, call Walter Babb at 423-337-6772. I have many other rods, in case someone wants a rod for lighter lines or a shorter small stream type rod.”
