Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:52 am, the temperature is 33.3 degrees.
This is going to be a beautiful Spring-like day with a high temperature in the mid-60’s. Warm air will remain in the Tennessee Valley through the weekend. We have a chance for rain tomorrow though it is not expected to be heavy. It may be windy though, with gusts to 25 miles per hour. Sunday will be clear and warm with light winds.
Little River is flowing at 212 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.07 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 215 cfs. The water temperature is 41.7 degrees. Yesterday, the water temperature rose about three degrees during the day at the Townsend Gauge on Little River.
Streams in the Park are chilly this morning and flowing at or near normal.
Fishing in the Smokies will improve some through the day and the weekend. The warm rain tomorrow will be helpful. It will be overcast tomorrow. I don’t know how warm the streams will be but they will be warmer and trout will be more active as the water warms. Nymphs will probably work best. I would be prepared for a blue wing olive hatch, especially tomorrow.
Lowland river fishing is slow except for trout in the rivers where they are stocked. I heard TWRA will be stocking trout in Pistol Creek in Maryville tomorrow. I am not certain but I think that is correct. Nymphs and streamers will work best in the trout stocked rivers and fishing will improve by tomorrow.
I saw a couple of tailwater wade fishing opportunities from the TVA list but you will need to go early. They will be generating at most dams later this morning. I did not check all dam release schedules so you might browse yourself and find some options, especially if you are boating.
Today will be a nice lake fishing day. I talked to some lake anglers yesterday and learned that the surface temperatures in some impoundments are around 50 degrees. That is not bad at all for December. Fishing is probably not great but you might get some action using heavily weighted streamers. Get them down deep and retrieve slowly. Tomorrow would be a better lake fishing day but it will be breezy.
We get quite a few local crappie anglers visiting the fly tying department and this is their time of the year. It is because of them, we stock calf tails in a lot of different colors. They tie crappie jigs using the hair from these tails. New tails arrive at the shop almost every week. These guys come in a pick their favorites.
I have not fished for crappie since I was a kid. So, I enjoy talking to those who do. I can’t believe they get out there on nasty Winter days in their boats to fish. Believe me, they do.
The missing Firehole shipment finally arrived yesterday after several days of MIA in Billings, Montana. Will received them into our inventory then he placed another Firehole order. One of three Wapsi orders came in yesterday too. I will receive it today.
Daniel ordered 170 small plastic boxes yesterday to be used for tying thread storage. We will use these boxes for what we call “back stock”. I package the thread we display on the walls. If I see the displayed threads depleting, I package more from back stock so we don’t appear to be out. Thread is a popular item purchased on our online store. We fill those orders from the back stocked inventory.
Enjoy this warm weekend. Get out and go fishing if you can.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.

Buy a Walter Babb made bamboo fly rod or his beautiful 10- dozen flies for charity.
“Due to Covid-19, there will not be a Needy Family Fund Auction this year. I made a rod and tied some flies for the Auction this Spring, so I will be selling them and the proceeds will go to the Needy Family Fund.
Th rod is an 8’ 0” 2 piece 6-weight Stan’s Blackfoot, a great taper from Stan Smartt. This is a single tip rod. The price is $850 plus sales tax.
There is also a box of 10 dozen of my favorite nymphs and wet flies. The price is $253.95 plus sales tax if you are a Tennessee resident.
If interested, call Walter Babb at 423-337-6772. I have many other rods, in case someone wants a rod for lighter lines or a shorter small stream type rod.”
