Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:54 am, the temperature is 26.4 degrees.
Today will be partly cloudy with a high temperature near 50 degrees. Expect a low tonight in the mid to upper 30’s with a chance for showers. Rain is possible tomorrow morning. It will be overcast with a high near 50 degrees by afternoon.
Little River is flowing at 406 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.47 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 238 cfs. The water temperature is 41.2 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing above normal. Water temperatures are cold. We will see water temperatures warm some over the next two days. Fishing will be slow in the Smokies today but you may catch trout, especially post spawn browns. If you go, wait until later when the falling water temperatures bottom out and begin to rise. Weighted nymph rigs will be your best bet today.
Lowland river fishing will be slow due to the cold water temperatures. You might catch stocked trout in these rivers, especially later today using nymphs or streamers.
I see breaks in the generation at a couple of dams today, including Center Hill Dam and Norris Dam. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
If you plan to fish on a lake today, you will find calm winds and it will be partly cloudy later. I would use weighted streamers retrieved slowly. I would go later when it is warmer.
We are selling a lot of gift cards. Shippers are slow to deliver right now so an e-mailed gift card is a great option for last minute Christmas shoppers. You can buy them online or call us at 865-448-9459 to order one. Or, come by the store and buy a card.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.

Buy a Walter Babb made bamboo fly rod or his beautiful 10- dozen flies for charity.
“Due to Covid-19, there will not be a Needy Family Fund Auction this year. I made a rod and tied some flies for the Auction this Spring, so I will be selling them and the proceeds will go to the Needy Family Fund.
Th rod is an 8’ 0” 2 piece 6-weight Stan’s Blackfoot, a great taper from Stan Smartt. This is a single tip rod. The price is $850 plus sales tax.
There is also a box of 10 dozen of my favorite nymphs and wet flies. The price is $253.95 plus sales tax if you are a Tennessee resident.
If interested, call Walter Babb at 423-337-6772. I have many other rods, in case someone wants a rod for lighter lines or a shorter small stream type rod.”
Walter
