Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 33.8 degrees.
Today will be partly sunny with a high temperature in the mid-50’s dipping only to the low 40’s tonight. It will be windy today and tonight. Expect gusts up to 50 miles per hour in the high elevations. Tomorrow will be warmer with a high in the low 60’s and a low around 50 degrees.
Rain will move into our area tomorrow, lasting through New Years Day. Rain may be heavy at times. It will be very warm New Years Day, with temperatures in the mid to upper 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 463 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.58 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 290 cfs. The water temperature is 43.0 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Park that have USGS gauge sites are flowing slightly higher than normal. Stream levels are not receding much due to melting snow. Cold water trickling into the streams from the melting snow is holding the water temperatures lower for now.
Hopefully, water temps will rise over the next few days, improving fishing in the Smokies.
Weighted nymphs fished deep are good fly choices today.
Lowland river fishing is slow but fishing for trout where they are stocked should improve over the next few days as the water warms.
TVA and the Corps will be generating today at most dams in the area. I did not see wade fishing opportunities unless you are there now at some dams. You have boat fishing options on some tailwaters, especially early. I do not view every generation schedule so check yourself from the links below to see if you can work with the flows on your favorite tailwater.
We are busy at the shop and will be through the weekend. We will be closed New Years Day. There are a lot of fly tyers visiting the shop. People have learned we expanded the fly tying department and it is stocked very well. Customers are ordering materials and tools from us online, or calling the shop to order as well as visiting in person.
To keep the department stocked, we are ordering weekly from most suppliers and more often from our largest suppliers, Wapsi and Renzetti.
After this weekend, business will be slow for a couple of months. Then, at some point, Spring fishing will begin. That can happen in February. It will more likely occur in March. We never know until it happens. Spring fishing is water temperature driven.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
