Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:51 am, the temperature is 55.9 degrees.
It will be cloudy today with a high temperature in the low 60’s and a low tonight around 50 degrees. Rain will develop tonight, with a 70% chance. Less than a half of an inch of rain is expected.
New Years Day will be cloudy, windy and very warm, with a high temperature in the mid-60’s. There is a high chance for more rain, up to a quarter of an inch with locally heavier amounts. The temperature will fall to the high 40’s overnight.
Saturday will be mostly sunny and warm with a high in the low 60s and a low of around 40. No rain is predicted until after dark.
Sunday will be cooler with showers possible in the morning then cloudy in the afternoon. The high temperature will be in the mid-40’s with a low in the low 30’s overnight.
Little River is flowing at 458 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.57 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 299 cfs. The water temperature is 46.4 degrees this morning and rising.
All streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauge sites are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are rising at each of those locations.
I may be going out on a limb, but if these water temperatures keep rising like I think they will, fishing will improve considerably. Snow melt in the highest elevations could halt the temperature rise temporarily.
If the water temps rise to near 50 degrees or warmer, fishing will be fair to good. Nymphs will probably work best but be prepared for a hatch of blue wing olives or other aquatic insects. Dry flies and emergers may work at times over the next few days.
If rainfall is heavy in the watershed you are fishing, streams could rise and become stained. We are not expecting heavy downpours but that could occur in some areas.
We probably won’t see fishing conditions this good in the mountains for a while. Wind could be an issue and of course, there is the possibility of heavy showers.
Every dam checked on the TVA website indicated generation almost all day today. I did not see schedules for every dam so look yourself and you may find suitable conditions for fishing your favorite tailwater. You will have more options if you are boating.
Today ends the year we will never forget. Next year may be one of the best years in memory. I think it will be. I worked a lot this year, which was helpful for me. Little River Outfitters is my most enjoyable hobby. Paula tackled some major projects at our home, which kept her very busy. We are both disappointed we were not able to spend more time with friends and family over the holidays.
Spring fishing will be here before we know it. We all have that to look forward to.
We will be closed tomorrow for the New Year Holiday. I do not plan to write a fishing report tomorrow. We will be back in full force Saturday and hopefully fishing will be good for you.
Have a great day and Happy New Year to all. Thank you for being here supporting us in 2020 and for the past 25+ years.
