Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 26.6 degrees.
Today will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature in the mid to upper 40’s. Rain and snow showers will move into the area tonight and continue through tomorrow. Tonight’s low will be in the low 30’s. The high temperature tomorrow will be in the upper 30’s. The precipitation will end by tomorrow night. It will be cold Saturday, but partly sunny. Sunday will be sunny and warmer.
Little River is flowing at 328 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.30 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 292 cfs. The water temperature is 42.3 degrees and falling.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing at normal this morning. The streams are cold, with water temps falling near or into the 30’s in the higher elevations.
Trout will not be very active due to the cold water. If you go, weighted nymph rigs are your best chance for catching trout. High sticking or Euro nymphing techniques will offer you a better chance for success. Don’t expect fishing to be good.
The same is true in the lowland rivers. Water temperatures are plunging. Fishing will be slow. You might try using nymph rigs where trout are stocked in these rivers. Smallmouth bass will be inactive.
I found some encouraging generation schedules for tailwater anglers. Check the flows at Center Hill, Norris and South Holston Dams. Or, view the schedules at other dams in middle or east Tennessee. You may have some options, especially if you are boating and dressed warmly.
If you are fishing on a lake today, watch for swimming wild hogs. You probably won’t see any. I fish the lakes often and have never witnessed it. Pigs do swim. A man from Maryville captured video of a family of wild hogs swimming on a lake near our home. You can watch the video and read the story on the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE.
I have seen deer swimming in the lake. I once saw a squirrel fall or dive from a tree into the lake and immediately swam back to shore. I wondered at the time if what that squirrel did was intentional.
I met a couple of guys who saw a bobcat crossing the lake. Bears swim there. I have heard that from several people. I know one person who actually killed a hog that was swimming there. Another person I know said he killed a bear swimming in the lake. Bear hunting season was open in our County at the time.
Enjoy the video.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
