Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 38.5 degrees.
Light rain is falling this morning in Townsend. Temperatures will fall and the rain will change to wet snow later this morning. Snow accumulations are likely and heavier snow will fall in the the Smokies with 4 to 8 inches possible in the high elevations. Today’s high temperature will be what it is now. Expect lows in the 20’s tonight.
Tomorrow will be sunny and cold with a high in the upper 30’s and lows in the mid-20’s. It will be partly cloudy Sunday with highs in the middle 40’s.
Several roads are closed in Great Smoky Mountains National Park due to snow and ice. The closed roads include: Gatlinburg Bypass, Cherokee Orchard Road, Little River Road from Sugarlands to Townsend, Laurel Creek Road from the “Y” to Cades Cove and US 441/Newfound Gap Road.
Little River is flowing at 319 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.28 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 312 cfs. The water temperature is 42.8 degrees and steady.
Most streams in the Park are flowing near normal. Water temperatures are cold and they will be falling today through tomorrow night. Trout will be sluggish. If you go, weighted nymph rigs might get the trout’s attention. Do not expect fishing to be good.
Lowland river fishing is slow. You may catch trout in some rivers where they are stocked. Nymphs are what I would use. Try egg patterns too.
TVA and the Corps will be generating today at most dams in the area. There may be breaks in the generation at some dams. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see if you have any tailwater fishing options.
We are very slow at the shop which is normal the first week of the year. Last year was worse so I don’t feel too bad about it.
The fly tying department is performing extremely well. Will, David and I are increasing the inventory in that department. We have placed some huge orders that will arrive soon and the new inventory levels will be maintained. We will be stocking more materials and tools than ever before, by a large amount.
We decided yesterday to use a small storage room for back stock in the department, something we have never done before. We have always had everything we stock in the fly tying department out where you could see it all. Not anymore.
Traffic is very light in Townsend, mostly local folks and very few tourists. Welcome to Winter in the Smokies.
Spring fishing will be here before we know it. We are all anxiously waiting.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
