Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:40 am, the temperature is 34.2 degrees.
It will be cloudy early, clearing later, with a high temperature in the middle 30’s today. Tonight’s low will be in the low 20’s. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the middle 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 303 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.24 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 296 cfs. The water temperature is 42.1 degrees this morning.
Several closed roads in the Park re-opened yesterday. Highway 441/Newfound Gap Road is still closed according to the Park’s Road Twitter Page. Cades Cove is open. Wherever you drive, watch for snow and ice in the Park.
Though no snow fell in Townsend yesterday, LeConte Lodge reported 10 inches on the ground early yesterday morning with 7 inches of that falling night before last. The Winter caretaker at the lodge writes a report every morning, later than I do. I read it every morning when Winter storms are active in the Smokies and wonder what it is like living up there alone.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing near normal. Water temperatures are cold and will likely chill further tonight. Trout will be sluggish. If you go, weighted nymph rigs are your best choice of flies and methods. Do not expect good fishing today.
Lowland river fishing will be slow. You might entice stocked trout with nymphs and egg patterns fished deep. Don’t expect too much activity due to the cold water conditions.
Check the TVA generation schedules from the links below. You may find some opportunities to fish on your favorite tailwater today. There are breaks in the generation at Center Hill, Norris. and South Holston Dams. There may be others.
Business was slow at the shop again yesterday which is normal in January.
I drove to the shop yesterday before daybreak as usual to disinfect surfaces we touch and print some reports. Then, I took the day off. I am trying to take one day off each week. Paula and I sat by the fire all day, relaxed and listened to music. I also took a long Winter’s nap.
I am always excited to get back to work after a day off and today is no exception.
Traffic will probably be light in town today. This might be a good day to visit Cades Cove. From what I have heard, there are still many people visiting Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, so the Cove could be crowded. I don’t know what to expect.
We are inching our way to Fishing Spring. It won’t be long.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
