Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 35.6 degrees.
It will be mostly sunny today with a high temperature in the middle 40’s falling into the 20’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high near 50 degrees. Thursday will be warmer, in the middle 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 242 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.08 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 317 cfs. The water temperature is 41.0 degrees this morning and rising.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing near normal. Water temperatures are low but remaining steady or rising.
Fishing will be slow in the mountains. If you go, nymphs will be your best fly choices. Fish them weighted and deep.
Lowland river fishing will be slow today. You do have a chance to catch a trout or two, where they are stocked. Try nymphs or streamers. Egg patterns may work. Don’t expect much action today.
There are a few tailwater fishing opportunities today. If you are boating, there are more. View the generation schedules on the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
Hopefully, more anglers have been fishing the tailwaters in middle and east Tennessee lately. There seem to be more angler friendly flows at the dams when I check each morning. If you fish with a guide, you might want to call them and book a Winter boat fishing trip.
Looking ahead over the next ten days, it appears now that temperatures will be near normal through January 27th. The average high temperature in January is 48 degrees with the average low being 25 degrees. February is typically warmer.
In some years recently, February has been very warm by mid-month. We have been seeing warmer water temperatures, hatches and good fishing in middle to late February. Maybe this will be one of those years.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
