Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:48 am, the temperature is 28.8 degrees.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the upper 40’s falling into the 20’s again tonight. It will be sunny and much warmer tomorrow with a high in the middle to upper 50’s. Rain and snow will change to rain Friday as the high reaches the middle to upper 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 232 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.05 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 315 cfs. The water temperature is 40.8 degrees and falling.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing near normal. Water temperatures are cold at all elevations and currently falling. Water temps will begin to rise at some point today but not much. We should see temperatures rise more tomorrow.
Fishing in the mountains will be slow today. If you go, try weighted nymph rigs.
Lowland river fishing is slow due to the cold water temperatures. If you are fishing where trout are stocked, try nymphs or egg patterns.
Fishing opportunities are limited on the tailwaters today. I did notice breaks in the generation schedules at Center Hill and Norris Dams. There may be others. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are today.
Looking ahead at the long term weather forecast, it appears daytime temperatures will be about normal through January 27th. Temperatures at night are predicted to be warmer than normal.
February is historically warmer than January. Spring fishing has begun in February in some recent years. What we will be looking forward to are water temperatures around 50 degrees and sustained for a few days. When that occurs, fishing will be good again.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
