Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 25.7 degrees.
It will be sunny and warmer today with a high in the middle 50’s, falling to the middle 30’s tonight. We have a chance for rain mixed with snow early tomorro, then rain is possible later in the day. The high will be in the middle 40’s falling to the upper 20’s tomorrow night.
It will be cold this weekend. Saturday’s high is predicted to be in the mid to upper 30’s with a chance for snow showers. After a cold night in the 20’s, Sunday will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature around 40 degrees.
Little River is flowing at 222 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.02 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 299 cfs. The water temperature is 38.1 degrees this morning and falling.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing at or below normal. The water is cold, mostly in the 30’s presently. The water is very clear. Fishing is slow. If you go, fish the lower elevations where the water is warmer. I would go later this afternoon after the water has begun to warm. Fishing will not be good. If you do catch trout, it will probably be on weighted nymph rigs. Don’t expect much action.
The same is true in the lowland rivers. They are flowing lower and clear.
This has been a fairly dry January so far.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at most dams all day with some exceptions. There are breaks in the generation schedules at Center Hill, Norris and South Holston Dams. There may be others. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are. If you are boating, you will have more.
The Fly Fishing Show, a company owned by the Furimsky family, has cancelled or postponed almost all of their shows this year. This has not only disappointed fly anglers across America, it is a blow to the companies and employees who serve attendees. These shows draw thousands of anglers. Jack and I are building a purchasing and receiving office on the ground floor at the shop. Jack is the craftsman and I am the laborer. I slept like a baby last night. We’ll be back on it today.
We have several large fly tying orders in house that will be received today. Another big one from Wapsi will be delivered today. I will receive that one tomorrow and Saturday. Will, David and I are doing everything in our power to keep the department stocked. The fly tying supply chain is stretched right now, to the limit. People at Wapsi are working on weekends to fulfill their orders from dealers.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
