Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 36.3 degrees.
Some roads in Great Smoky Mountains Park closed yesterday due to snow and ice and have not re-opened. They include, Laurel Creek Road from the “Y” to Cades Cove, Cades Cove Loop Road, Wear Cove Gap and Foothills Parkway West. Newfound Gap Road has been closed since January 14th.
It will be mostly cloudy today with a high in the low 40’s. It will be breezy with wind gusts to 20 miles per hour possible. We have a slight chance for rain and snow tonight. The low temperature will be in the upper 20’s. Tomorrow will be partly sunny with a high around 40 degrees.
Little River is flowing at 199 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.95 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 255 cfs. The water temperature is 38.5 degrees this morning.
Other streams in the Smokies have similar flows and water temperatures. Fly fishing for trout will be slow today and tomorrow. If you go, your best option is fishing with weighted nymph rigs.
Lowland river fishing is slow due to the cold water temperatures.
It appears the generators will be turned off today at Norris Dam. Check the schedule from the link below to see if you can work with their plans. I don’t see any evidence they will be sluicing today. Look at the schedules for Cherokee and South Holston Dams. Check the schedules at other dams in the region. There may be several options for tailwater fishing today.
Dave, Will and I worked all day in the fly tying department yesterday and it looks good. More orders are on their way to Townsend. I will be ordering from Wapsi again today. The department is stocked very well except for some hooks that are out of stock from Umpqua. We have plenty of Mustad and Firehole hooks in stock. We are very well stocked with beads, both tungsten round, tungsten slotted and brass.
Though we didn’t get much snow at all in the valley yesterday morning, the mountains are white and beautiful. I hope Cades Cove opens today, so you can enjoy the spectacular views. I noticed the backside of some mountains surrounding the cove when I drove home from work yesterday. We see those peaks from our home. Paula and I sat by the fire late yesterday and gazed at the snow covered mountains. It was cold and the air was very clear. The mountains appear closer when the air is this clear.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
