Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. It is warm this morning and the rain has stopped. Unfortunately, storms rolled across the mountains last night and dumped a bit of rain. Water levels rose quickly and are now at an unsafe level for fishing.
The gauge on Little River is reading 5.50 feet or 3020 c.f.s. Even with a spinning rod from the bank this is too high to make good fishing. The daily average flow is 361 c.f.s. Water temperatures rose sharply to 48.74 F. Temperatures will drop again over the next several days as overnight air temps will be down close to freezing.
Looking at streamflow gauges for the other streams around the area I was seeing a lot of the same. Tellico is very high, as is the Little Pigeon and even the Oconoluftee. The weather today will be dry but more rain is coming on Wednesday.
The Clinch River looked to have a period of no generation later this afternoon but that is always subject to change so check before you go. The Holston and Hiwassee are both generating.
Winter is a quiet time in Townsend. Other than the weekend there aren't many people around town. At the Shop it is still fairly busy as we prepare for Spring. The guys have been doing inventory (I know that is nobody's favorite task). Spring orders are starting to arrive and more will be coming in the next month. Byron and Will have been very busy upstairs adding new products and continually fine tuning the Fly Tying Department.
One of the most exciting products we just got in is a new 9 foot 3wt Syndicate Pipeline rod. This is still a true euro style rod and not just a long 3wt. When you cast it you can feel the delicate tip but also all the power it has in the butt section. It is perfect for dry/dropper and euro nymphing on small streams. Rig your rod up with a standard 3wt fly line and then add a RIO Euro Shorty line on the front of it. This will let you switch between a dry fly, a dropper rig, and a true euro set up quickly.
Something else we are really excited about is Miss Mayfly waders. If you haven't heard of these they are womens waders that come in sizes to fit almost any lady angler. We should have all the sizes in stock. We'll be getting them added to the online store very soon. You won't have to put up with baggy waders or huge feet to get the feet you need.
Like I stated earlier, no fishing in the Smokies today. I just re-checked the gauge and now it is up to 6.69 feet or 4,630 c.f.s. It looks to have peaked but that is a lot of water. Time to tie some flies or organize the gear. Spring hatches and good fishing will be coming soon.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
