Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 45.0 degrees.
Today will be overcast and warm with a high temperature in the middle 50’s, dropping to the high 20’s tonight. We have a slight chance for rain early today, with a greater chance this afternoon. We will see more rain tonight, turning to snow late. New snow accumulation of less than a half of an inch is possible in the valley with heavier snow in the mountains.
Tomorrow will be sunny and cold with a high in the mid to high 30’s, falling to the low 20’s tomorrow night.

Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,420 cfs, 2.98 feet, compared to median flow of 542 cfs.

Most streams in the Smokies are flowing too high to safely wade. You could try standing in safe water using weighted nymph rigs. Euro nymphing or “high sticking” tactics might work. The streams have warmed some and they could warm further today. Trout will be a little more active than they have been recently. What we have are certainly not ideal fishing conditions.
Lowland river are flowing high. Wading will be limited. Be careful. Try nymphs or egg patterns where trout are stocked.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating at most dams all day today. There may be exceptions so check the TVA website from the links below to see if you can find angler friendly flows on your favorite tailwater.
We got a couple of warm days this week, which elevated the water temperature some. But, we also had heavy rain, which blew out the streams. It is going to be cold tomorrow and Friday, then a warming trend will begin this weekend only to get cold again early next week. It should be warm again toward the end of next week.
Fishing conditions normally improve in February. We wait for the water temperatures to rise to 50 degrees and stay in that range for Spring fishing to begin. Some years that happens in February, while in others it occurs in March.
It won’t be long.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
