Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:49 am, the temperature is 36.9 degrees.
Light snow is falling in Townsend this morning. It is too warm outside for the snow to stick. It will be cold today, with the high temperature being what it is now. Snow will continue through tonight. The temperature will fall into the 20’s. The snow will end tomorrow morning as temperatures remain cold with a high in the middle 30’s. Wednesday will be sunny and warmer.
According to the National Weather Service, snow amounts of 10 to 12 inches are expected in the Smokies at higher elevations.
Some roads in the Park have closed in anticipation of the heavy snow that is predicted there. They include, Newfound Gap Road, Gatlinburg Bypass, Cherokee Orchard Road and Little River Road from Sugarlands to the Townsend “Y”.

Little River is flowing at 611 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.66 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 305 cfs. The water temperature is 44.2 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are all flowing slightly higher than normal. Water temperatures are warmer than they were yesterday morning. Water temperatures will fall through Wednesday. Fishing will be slow.
I would stay out of the Park today. More roads may close.
Lowland river fishing will be slow until the water warms. You might catch trout in these free flowing rivers that exit the Park, where they are stocked. Nymphs and egg patterns might work for you.
TVA and the Corps plan to generate all day at every dam I checked this morning. Check yourself and you may find a tailwater to fish somewhere in east or middle Tennessee. Use the links below to the TVA website.
January is behind us. Now we wait and prepare for Spring fishing. Will that happen in February this year in the Smokies? It could. I has before, more often in recent years. The Weather Channel released their February Temperature Outlook. They say February will be warmer than normal.
Their long term forecast does not indicate a chance for warm water temperatures and good fishing through mid-month. That could change of course.
Two large shipments of fly tying materials will arrive at the shop today. One was ordered on January 17th. Before last year, we would have received that order days ago and placed another one. Some of our fly tying suppliers are moving slower than normal. That has been the case for almost one year. We will start receiving and displaying the materials tomorrow. Then, we will reorder again.
To make up for the longer fulfillment times from fly tying suppliers, we are stocking more of the best selling fly tying materials. That was a costly decision, but it has greatly improved our fly tying department’s stock levels for you.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
