Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 29.5 degrees.
We have a chance for snow showers this morning before clearing, with a high temperature in the middle 30’s. It will be cold tonight, falling to the low 20’s. Tomorrow will be partly cloudy and warmer with high around 40 degrees.
Several roads in Great Smoky Mountains National Park are closed due to snow and ice. The closed roads include Laurel Creek Road, Cades Cove Loop Road, Gatlinburg Bypass, Cherokee Orchard Road, Little River Road, Wears Gap Road and Newfound Gap Road.
Little River is flowing at 561 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.75 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 313 cfs. The water temperature is 38.8 degrees this morning.
The free flowing mountain streams and lowland rivers are cold. This trend will continue through tomorrow and beyond. Trout and other species will be sluggish. Fishing will be slow.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating all day at most dams in east Tennessee. You might find a tailwater with angler friendly flows so check the TVA website from the links below to see what options you have if there are any at all.
Basically, this not going to be a good fishing day. This will be a better fly tying day.
Due to the threat of snow yesterday, we were very slow at the shop. All we got at our house was a dusting of snow yesterday and last night. It is not snowing now.
The long range weather forecast has changed again. It will be cold through February 16th according to what I am reading now. I see the word “snow” often. Maybe fly fishing Spring will come soon after that date.
Writing a fishing report is a lot more fun when fishing is good. I am looking forward to that and I know you are too.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
