Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 28.4 degrees.
It will be cloudy this morning and clearing later with a high in the low 40’s. Tonight will be clear, dropping to the low 20’s. Warmer air will move in tomorrow, giving us a high temperature around 50 degrees to enjoy.
Many roads in Great Smoky Mountains National Park are closed due to snow and ice. The closed roads include, Laurel Creek, Cades Cove Loop, Little River Road from Sugarlands to Townsend and Newfound Gap Road.
Little River is flowing at 485 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.62 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 346 cfs. The water temperature is 38.1 degrees.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are in the 30’s at most elevations. Fishing is slow.
The same is true of the lowland rivers exiting the Smokies. All species, including trout are inactive due to the cold water temperatures.
What might work, though it is a long shot, would be using heavily weighted nymph rigs. I would not use strike indicators. Keep your nymphs drifting near the bottom at the same speed as the current. If your nymphs pass close to a trout, they might eat if they don’t have to swim too far.
TVA and the Corps are generating all day at most dams nearby. I did notice a break in the schedules at Wolf Creek and Center Hill Dams. There could be others. I did not check every one. Go to the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are today.
Will and I worked hard yesterday receiving fly tying orders from Wapsi, Firehole and Hareline Dubbin. Will re-ordered Firehole yesterday. I will order again from Wapsi today. I plan to order from Whiting Farms too. More orders are out there and we are waiting. We are doing our best to keep the department stocked and it shows. I think you will be pleased.
Traffic is extremely light in Townsend. We are slow at the shop. The Park has been practically closed due to the road conditions. We need warmer weather and this will change. It won’t be long.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
