Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:06 am, the temperature is 43.5 degrees.
We got .12 inches of rain overnight. Today will be mostly sunny with a high temperature in the middle 40’s, falling to the upper 20’s tonight. Saturday will be mostly sunny with a high near 50 degrees. Expect rain mixed with snow Saturday night with temperatures falling to near the freezing mark. There is a slight chance for rain or snow showers Sunday with a high in the middle 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 496 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.64 feet on the gauge. The river is rising. Median flow for this date is 387 cfs. The water temperature is 41.2 degrees and warming this morning.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are rising slowly. Most are probably fishable. You will find strong currents in the streams so be careful wading. Water temperatures have warmed somewhat and they may warm further today.
Fishing is probably not good but it is improving some as the waters warm. If you go, use weighted nymph rigs and hope for the best.
Lowland river fishing for smallmouth bass will be slow. You might have a shot a catching trout where they are stocked in these rivers. Nymphs or streamers will work best.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at most dams nearby. There are breaks in the generation schedules at Center Hill Dam in Middle Tennessee and Wolf Creek Dam in Kentucky. Look at the schedules on the TVA website from the links below to determine which tailwaters are possibly fishable today. You may have more options if you are boating.
The long term weather forecast indicates no chance for Spring fishing to begin in early to middle February. Unless the weather pattern changes, it will be cold for at least a few days. What we are waiting for are water temperatures rising to near 50 degrees or warmer. When that happens, aquatic insects will be hatching and trout feeding activity will increase.
Sometimes that occurs in middle to late February. Or, it may happen in early March.
It won’t be long.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
