Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. The sun is shining this morning making it feel a little warmer, though the frost on the car windshield is a start reminder that we are still in Winter. Today is supposed to warm to 50F so we better enjoy the warmth we can get.
Fishing is going to be tough in the mountains once again. Water levels are better with the stream flow gauge on Little River giving a reading of 2.54 feet or 442 c.f.s. Water temperatures fell over night down to 39F.
If you head to the Smokies today fish lower elevation streams and look for sunny stretches where the sun has had the chance to warm the water some. Traffic is lighter in the Park so now is the time to fish the front country. Also it is good to not be too far away from the car just incase you take an unplanned dip.
The first fly I tied on today would be someting heavy. Pat's Rubberlegs, a euro style nymph, a prince nymph or tellico. Don't be stingy with the split shot either. When water temperatures are below 40 the trout aren't going to be willing to move too far to eat.
Like Byron mentioned yesterday the weather forecast for the near future looks like a continuation of Winter. Time to hit the fly tying bench and get prepared for Spring. If you aren't a tyer it's time to inventory and organize. One thing I forget to check is tippet. One year I pulled out a spool a 5X to add to my leader. Only about 8 inches came off the spool before it ran out. I thought, that's not a problem I've got another spool. Yeah...there was only about 5 inches on that spool.
Yesterday we got a call from Syndicate Fly Rods. They were letting us know that their new rod was finally coming in. We've been waiting on this rod for months. It is going to take Euro Nymph fishing to a whole new level. Keep an eye on your email later this week for more info!
I'm going to get this uploaded. Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
