Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. Snow fell across the Tennessee Valley last night. This morning, most all the roads in GSMNP are closed. Newfound Gap Road, Little River Road, Laurel Creek Road and Cades Cove Loop Road are all closed. Two ways to find the most current road conditions are to call the Smokies info line 865-436-1200 or Twitter @smokyroadsnps.
Water conditions in the Smokies are not bad for this time of year. The gauge this morning is giving a reading of 2.59 feet or 468 c.f.s. To compare, the flow this date last year was 2,930. I'm very thankful that this year has been a more "normal" year for water flows. The average flow for today is 426 c.f.s. so we are right where we should be.
Water temperatures didn't change much from yesterday. They are still less than 40 which isn't ideal.
The Smokies is out today for fishing or doing much of anything. The Clinch is supposed to be turning off around noon. That might create some fishable conditions. Water flows are always subject to change.
Checking the weather forecast we are heading towards several warmer days. Early this week could make for some decent fishing in the mountains after they get the roads opened. It won't be warm enough for long enough to get the early mayflies to start hatching. That is fine, they need a few more weeks to be on schedule anyway.
Nymphs are always a solid bet when the water is cold. Trout are cold blooded so as temperatures drop their metabolism slows and they don't need to eat as much. They will be sluggish and less likely to move far to eat your fly. Put on some heavily weighted nymphs and get down to where they are sitting.
The best time of day to be on the river will be mid day. You want to be out there during the warmest part of the day when the river has had a chance to warm up some. Concentrate on edges. The trout won't be in the fast water but they still want movement.
As always this time of year be careful wading. Have an extra set of clothes in the vehicle. A slip and fall can cause an uncomfortable end to the day.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
