Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 6:10 am, the temperature is 29.8 degrees.
There is a slight chance for snow showers this morning. Otherwise, today will be mostly cloudy and cold, with a high temperature in the upper 20’s. It will be cold tonight, in the low 20’s. Warmer air will move in tomorrow and it will be mostly cloudy with a high in the middle to upper 40’s. Rain will enter the area tomorrow night, with a low in the middle 30’s. Expect rain again Thursday with a high around 50 degrees.
It looks like it will be sunny this weekend. That will be a welcome change.
Little River is flowing at 1,110 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.45 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 320 cfs. The water temperature is 46.2 degrees this morning and falling.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing very high today. Water temperatures are fair now but they are falling and that will continue through tonight and until the end of the week.
Newfound Gap Road is closed due to high wind warnings yesterday and last night. Most roads in Great Smoky Mountains National Park are open.
This is not a good day to be fishing in the Smoky Mountains. The streams are flowing high and water temperatures are falling. It will be breezy and very cold.
Most if not all lowland rivers exiting the mountains are flowing high today. Wading is limited. Water temperatures will be falling. This is not a good day to be fishing on the lowland rivers.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating at most dams all day. There are short breaks in the generation schedules at some, this afternoon. It appears the water will be turned off at Chatuge Dam most of the day. You may find some tailwater fishing opportunities by checking the TVA website. Depending on where you live, you may have to travel to fish. Dress warmly.
Though Winter is hanging on for a few days there is hope for better fishing conditions next week and into early March. Unless the weather pattern changes, and if the long term forecast holds true, fishing will improve.
Spring fishing may not be far off.
A home owner in Sevier County detected a gas leak and called the gas company to check it out. A huge female bear with three tiny cubs was found denning in a crawl space, making it impossible to detect and repair the leak. Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) was called in to assist. After encouragement from TWRA, the mother bear left the scene the next day, leaving the cubs behind. She did not return. The cubs were taken to UT Veterinary Hospital and eventually moved to Appalachian Bear Rescue in Townsend where they will be raised and released into the wild again.
I read the story this morning on several news websites. You can read more on the WATE website by CLICKING HERE.
