Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:50 am, the temperature is 24.8 degrees.
It will be sunny, fairly warm and beautiful today with a high temperature in the low to middle 50’s, dropping to the upper 30’s tonight. Rain and wind will move into the area by tomorrow morning and last all day. The high temperature will be in the low 50’s. Tuesday and Wednesday will be sunny and warm, with highs in the mid 50’s to the low 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 715 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.97 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 347 cfs. The water temperature is 40.1 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are still flowing high though they are receding. Water temperatures will be rising this week and fishing will improve. If you go fishing in the mountains today, stand in safe water and use weighted nymph rigs. Go later after the water begins to warm. Fishing will not be good but it is going to be much better soon.
The lowland rivers are flowing high. Wading will be limited today. You might try fishing where trout are stocked. Use weighted nymphs or egg patterns.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at most dams in middle and east Tennessee. I didn’t see any options for wade fishing in the tailwaters nearby though I did not check every generation schedule. You might find one you can work with by visiting the TVA website from the links below.
We are finally entering a period with warmer days and nights predicted through the end of the month and into the first week of March. The free flowing streams will be warming. Fishing will get better. All we need is water temperatures reaching or exceeding 50 degrees and reasonable flows. I am hopeful that will occur over the next two weeks.
We are all anticipating and looking forward to the end of this nasty Winter.
We are ready for you at the shop. I don’t know when we have been more organized than we are now. I saw piles of small fly shipping boxes in David A’s office yesterday. Those little clamshell boxes hold a dozen trout flies or a half dozen larger flies. Many are new patterns we have not sold before. You will be amazed at our fly selection this Spring.
I will be spending the day working in the fly tying department. We have large shipments of materials and tools scheduled to arrive this week. This has been a crazy fly tying year but we have stayed on top of the inventory. Some of our suppliers are slower to deliver. They are busy too.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
