Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 54.1 degrees.
It is very warm and windy this morning. Rain will be arriving soon before ending this afternoon. Tonight will be clear with a low in the middle 30’s. Tomorrow and Wednesday will be sunny and very warm. Expect a high temperature Wednesday in the 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 579 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.77 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 372 cfs. The water temperature is 43.2 degrees and rising.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are rising.
If we do not get too much rain today, fishing will improve due to the warming water temperatures. Temperatures are trending up over the next 10 days. Fishing will improve in the mountains.
I would wait a while before going fishing in the Smokies today. The wind is howling right now. Flows are fairly high so wading will be limited in some streams. Stand in safe water and use weighted nymph rigs.
Lowland rivers exiting the Smokies are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are rising. Fishing for stocked trout in these rivers will be slowly improving over the next few days. Nymphs and egg patterns are good fly choices.
Prolonged generation is what I saw on the TVA website this morning. I did not see any wade fishing opportunities on the area tailwaters. I did not check every dam, so you may find something you can work with. You may have to drive for a while to get there, if you find one.
This won’t be a good lake fishing day, due to the strong windy conditions.
We are waiting for warmer water temperatures to get things going in the Smokies. We are waiting for 50 degrees. When the streams reach that temperature for a few days, trout feeding and aquatic insect activity will increase. We will witness quill gordons, blue quills and other aquatic insects on the water. Trout will be feeding on the insects.
That will be the beginning of “Fishing Spring”. Exactly when that will happen is something we can’t predict. I think it will be coming soon. It is about that time. It will be getting warmer over the next few days.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
