Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:39 am, the temperature is 32.5 degrees.
It is cold this morning but it will be sunny and much warmer today, with a high temperature in the 60’s falling to the upper 30’s tonight. Tomorrow will be better, with sunshine and a high in the upper 60’s. It will be sunny Thursday, with the high reaching the middle 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 611 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.82 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 353 cfs. The water temperature is 42.8 degrees this morning and reached almost 46 degrees yesterday.
Most, if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal but most are now fishable. After a brief rise in water levels yesterday, they are all receding now and that will continue over the next three days.
Water temperatures will be rising all week. The trend will continue as there is no cold weather predicted through March 9th. We will enjoy warm days and nights through the period. Temperatures will be near normal or warmer than normal, especially at night.
Fishing in the Smokies will improve unless the weather pattern changes and we do not get too much rain.
If you go fishing in the mountains, fish the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Weighted nymph rigs will work best until the water warms to a the point when aquatic insects begin hatching and mating. When the water temperatures rise to 50 degrees or beyond for about 3 days, insect activity will occur. Trout will be actively feeding.
Be prepared with dark mayfly imitations and other species you may find on the water.
Lowland river fishing will improve over the next few days, if you are fishing for stocked trout. Nymphs and egg patterns will probably work best. You might try streamers too. Smallmouth bass will become active when the water temperature exceeds 50 degrees.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at most dams I checked this morning. Wade fishing on most tailwaters will not be an option today. I did see breaks in the generation planned at Tims Ford and Chatuge dams when I visited the TVA website just now.
The weather forecast looks good. We are in for some warm days and nights for a while. It will be raining some days. Rainfall in February has been normal so far. We are hoping for normal rain this Spring. That will bode well for tailwater anglers as there will be more periods of less generation when TVA and the Corps of Engineers begin raising the impoundments in March.
We have much to look forward to in the coming days. Fishing may improve quickly.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
