Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 53.6 degrees.
The high temperature yesterday was in the low 70’s, warmer than was predicted. This warming trend will continue through the weekend, with highs in the 50’s 60’ and 70 degrees or warmer on Sunday. Lows at night will be in the 40’s today and tomorrow, and in the 50’s Saturday and Sunday. Rain will move in tomorrow and continue at times through the weekend.
Water temperatures are slowly rising in the Smokies. Little River topped out yesterday at about 47 degrees. Warm rain may raise the temperatures further tomorrow through Sunday. What we are hoping for are water temperatures in the low 50’s. If that happens, fishing will be at least fair and possibly good.
Little River is flowing at 490 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.62 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 370 cfs. The water temperature is 46.4 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal and warmer than normal.
If you go today, weighted nymph rigs will probably work best.
Lowland river fishing is slowly improving thanks to the warmer water. Fish the rivers where trout are stocked using nymphs, egg patterns or streamers.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating at most dams in the area all day. Every dam schedule I clicked on showed no wade fishing options today. Check the TVA website from the links below and you may find something you can work with.
The long term weather forecast looks good through March 11th. Temperatures will be warm most days, and much warmer than normal at night. Rain is predicted ten days out of the 14 days during the period. I don’t see a chance for snow or freezing temperatures over the next two weeks, but that is subject to change.
We are ready for the coming of “Fishing Spring” at the shop. Some shipments from our suppliers, especially in the fly tying department, are delayed because of the storm.
Our largest fly tying supplier, Wapsi, was shut down last week and they are behind. I got an email from Pat, the International Sales Manager at Wapsi. He apologized for the delay and said they are slammed with orders and trying to catch up.
I really like everyone we work with at Wapsi. They operate their business from the friendly town of Mountain Home, Arkansas. I know they are trying hard to take care of their dealers. We have been a dealer for 26 years.
Other suppliers are shipping well, though the shipping companies have their logistical issues too, due to the storm.
This will improve soon and get back to normal.
Have a great day and thank you for being her with us.
