Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 33.8 degrees.
There is no rain in the forecast through next Wednesday. It is going to be sunny and warm during the daylight hours, and cold at night, in the upper 20’s to low 30’s through Sunday. Beginning Tuesday, the warm front will move in bringing us highs in the 60’s and 70’s, and lows in the upper 40’s and 50’s at night. The chance for rain will increase some by the end of next week.
Little River is flowing at 567 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.75 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 373 cfs. The water temperature is 45.7 degrees, and rose to about 48 degrees yesterday.
Streams in the Smokies continue to recede and we will see more improvement today and this weekend. Flows are higher than many anglers prefer and some are swift. Water temperatures are chilly.
You may catch trout, especially in the low elevations where the water is warmer. I would wait to go later in the day when the water is warmer. Stand in safe water and use weighted nymph rigs.
Lowland rivers exiting the mountains are flowing high. The water is too cold for smallmouth bass activity. You might catch trout where they are stocked using nymphs.
I didn’t see any tailwater wade fishing opportunities today below the dams I checked. They will be generating all day and night at most dams. You may find an opportunity by viewing all the schedules from the links below.
Good Spring fishing in the free flowing streams will begin next week. It is going to be warm, day and night. Water temperatures will rise. Stream flows will be good most of the week. You will see adult aquatic insects on the water. Trout will be feeding on them. Trout feeding activity will be high. Fishing will be good.
If you go next week, plan for nymph, wet fly or dry fly fishing. Quill gordon, blue quill and other insects will be present. Trout feeding activity will be high. We are all anxiously anticipating next week’s fishing improvement. Fishing will get better every day beginning Tuesday.
The change to daylight savings time is not far off. The daylight hours are getting longer. Warm temperatures are predicted at least through the middle of March.
This is going to be a nice weekend in the Smokies. The sunshine will help warm the streams, though the high temperatures will be only in the 50’s. We will have great camping weather. I’m sure we will be busy at the shop.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
