Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 30.4 degrees.
We were tricked by the weather forecasters. It was colder last night than was predicted yesterday morning.
They say today will be sunny with a high temperature around 70 degrees with a low tonight in the low 40’s. Tomorrow will be warmer, in the low 70’s, with a low in the low 50’s tomorrow night. Friday will be similar with a chance for rain.
Little River is flowing at 319 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.27 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 374 cfs. The water temperature is 43.0 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing near or slightly below normal. Water temperatures are chilly this morning. The streams will warm further each day this week, to within the trout’s preferred range. Fishing will improve every day.
You might want to wait to go fishing later today when the water is warmer. What we are waiting for are water temperatures to reach near 50 degrees or warmer. At that point, trout will become more active. Watch the water temperatures on the USGS website. Check Little River or Oconaluftee River’s pages. Fish the low elevations where the water is warmer.
Quill Gordons, Blue Quills and other aquatic insects will be active this week. The hatches will be sporadic. Nymphs and wet flies will work best until you see surface feeding activity. That may happen this week. Then, try dry flies or wet flies. A dry fly with a wet fly dropper is a good choice when the trout are feeding on top.
Lowland river fishing, where these rivers exit the mountains will be slow to start this morning but fishing will improve every day this week. Unlike the wild trout found in the Smokies, these are mostly stocked trout. Little River in Townsend and other lowland rivers are scheduled to be stocked this week.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating around the clock at most dams in the area today. Tailwater wade fishing probably will not be possible today below most dams. I don’t check every generation schedule so visit the TVA website and hopefully you can find a fishable tailwater today.
Lake fishing is probably slow in the shallows where we fish with flies. The water is too cold right now. As water temperatures rise, smallmouth bass will move into the shallows, preparing to spawn. That is when I like to be on the lakes, loaded up with heavily weighted black Wooly Buggers.
We are all waiting for the water temperatures to rise. We are busy at the shop as customers are preparing for Spring fishing in the Smokies.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
