Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 32.0 degrees.
It was colder last night than was predicted, again.
The forecasters are telling us today will be sunny with a high temperature in the low 70’s, falling to 50 degrees tonight. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny again with a high in the low to middle 70’s. The low tomorrow night is predicted to be in the low to middle 50’s. Friday should be partly sunny and warm, in the low 70’s. We have a chance for rain in the afternoon with a low in the 50’s Friday night.
It will be cooler this weekend during the day, with highs in the 60’s and lows in the 50’s. There is a chance for rain this weekend and a greater chance Monday.
Little River is flowing at 291 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.20 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 382 cfs. The water temperature is 44.4 degrees. Yesterday, the temperature rose to about 46.5 degrees. We are waiting for 50 degrees or warmer.
All streams in the Smokies are flowing at or slightly lower than normal.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, go later after the water warms. Nymphs will probably work best today. As the water warms further this week, the chance for dry fly fishing will increase. Aquatic insects are active. You may see sporadic hatches of Quill Gordons, Blue Quills and other species on the water. Fishing will get better every day this week.
Many lowland rivers that exit the mountains and stay cool through late Spring are stocked with trout. Some streams are stocked by towns, including Gatlinburg and Cherokee. Others are stocked by Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) or by the state of North Carolina. Fishing will improve in the lowland rivers where trout are stocked this week as the water warms. Nymphs and egg patterns are good fly choices. Streamers may work too. Try a Wooly Bugger. Little River in Townsend is scheduled to be stocked this week. Maybe that has already happened.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers will improve when the water temperature is sustained at 50 degrees or warmer.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers are generating around the clock at most dams right now. Wade fishing options in most tailwaters are rare today. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are. You might find something. I hope they do something different this weekend. Maybe they will.
People I talk to are enjoying this beautiful Spring-like weather. I am seeing more people visiting Townsend. Looking at the long term weather forecast, it appears Winter is over here.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
