Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:26 am, the temperature is 52.2 degrees.
The predicted rain held off yesterday until about 5 pm. A total of .59 inches fell near our house.
We have a 50% chance for more rain today and a high temperature in the middle 60’s, falling to about 50 degrees tonight. A tenth to a quarter of an inch is expected today. It will be warm again tomorrow with a chance for rain. The predicted high temperature will be in the low 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 311 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.25 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 350 cfs. The water temperature is 52.2 degrees this morning. The river has peaked and is receding.
Little Pigeon River is still rising this morning. Flow is currently 659 cfs, 2.37 feet, compared to median flow of 696 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is barely rising. Flow is 621 cfs, 2.05 feet, compared to median flow of 687 cfs. The water temperature is 51.8 degrees. It does not appear much rain fell in the watershed yesterday.
Tellico River is flowing at 305 cfs, 1.62 feet, which compares to median flow of 365 cfs. The river is not rising.
Cataloochee Creek did not rise hardly at all. Flow is 148 cfs, 2.75 feet, compared to median flow of 154 cfs. The water temperature is 49.5 degrees.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing near normal. Water temperatures are good in the low elevations. Fishing is good. I would fish today in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Trout will be taking nymphs, wet flies and possibly dry flies.
Before yesterday, most anglers were reporting hatches of quill gordon mayflies and other aquatic insects. You will probably see sporadic hatches today. Be prepared for just about anything. A good dry fly pattern to use is a Parachute Adams in various sizes.
Lowland river fishing where trout are stocked is good. Nymphs, egg patterns and streamers will work for you.
I saw breaks in the generation schedules at a few dams in middle and east Tennessee today. Refer to the TVA website to see what options are available for you to fish on the tailwaters.
Spring fishing has arrived. Lots of people are fly fishing again. The guides are getting busy. We are busy at the shop. I spent the day yesterday, receiving and displaying fly tying materials. That will continue today and tomorrow.
The time changes tonight. There will be more time to fish after work.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
